Recommendations for Proper Library Etiquette

Useful Tips when Visiting a Library

I frequent the local library facilities and have found there is a general lack of etiquette. In an effort to improve not only my personal experience at the library but also the experience of my fellow library patrons, I offer these useful tips in proper library etiquette.

Wear Shoes

Now this should go without saying. And maybe, because I am living in the South, I am simply exposed to some abnormal behaviors. However, my experiences recently have found that there are individuals who visit the library and feel comfortable enough to take their shoes off. Please note:
The library is a public place, often visited by individuals of all walks of life. If you don't want a foot infection, please keep your shoes on. Personally, I don't want to see or smell your feet.

Whisper

Again, this should go without saying. However, in today's society it seems we have lost the ability to use our "inside voices". I would think that it would be common sense that noise should be kept at a minimum, considering the enormous amount of books in your presence, but if you are confused about what noise level is appropriate, look around at those who are actually reading. Are they making any noise? Follow their lead.

No Food
The last time I checked, the library was not a restaurant, bar or a public park. This is not a place to consume food products, especially chips, crackers and hard candy. Now, if you want to sneak in a snack to munch on while you are QUIETLY studying, please be sure it is a soft product; something you can chew quietly without my ears noticing you when you are seated 150 feet from me.

Turn Off Cell Phones

The library should be a place of refuge for those seeking silence and an opportunity to enjoy reading, conduct research and write. If you want, or need, to discuss an issue with someone, please take the conversation outside. Again, this is not a public venue in which to carry on a two-way conversation.

Do Not Re-Shelve Books

I work in a library and want to thank you for your great insights! Parents who don't supervise their children are irresponsible and greatly add to our workload...re-shelving, cleaning up after, and trying to get our own work done while minding someone's child is impossible; nor is it safe for young children to be unsupervised in any public place. I hope the guilty parties are reading and heeding your post!

Question: is there a term for leaving a book (that you own and have read) in a public place so that it can be enjoyed by someone else?

Let's add no beverages in the library. There is nothing like liquid around books, magazines, and computers to make a librarian nervous. Good article.
