On an early Saturday morning in Morton Illinois, it's not uncommon to see a large group of men gathering together for "porn and pancakes" at New Life Christian Church.

If the event seems a little off-putting it's because it was meant to. The event is hosted by local pastor Craig Gross, a founder of the online Christian ministry XXXChurch.com. Pastors, leaders of the community, and even a producer in the porn industry are among the gathering's guest speakers. Though women count for 29% of the porn consumed daily in the U.S., this meager portion of the remaining 71% gather together to gain support and a shoulder for one another in a haven that has long been closed to them, the church. Ranging from an unsettling draw to a lifelong addiction, these men assemble each week and discuss what kind of affect the porn industry has had on their psyche, families, on the self image of themselves and their wives, and their fidelity.

This is just one of the many events sponsored by XXXChurch.com. Founding Pastors Craig Gross, 28, and Mike Foster, 32, felt burdened five years ago to begin a ministry to the porn business, a community that had gone all but untouched by the evangelical community for years. Which is unfortunate, because with sentiments supported by the nonscientific poll conducted on the ministry's website that claims 70% of Christians admit to struggling with internet porn, many increasingly feel that this kind of challenge needs more than a handful of don'ts and a don't ask/don't tell policy. People need to know there's a safe place they can go when they are surrounded by temptations that simply don't sit well with them. Now that this seedy subculture of porn is inching closer and closer to the hyper-sexualized mainstream, the pastors feel it's necessary now more than ever to increase our ability to have a brutally honest conversation about what our closeted practices are doing to our open daily lives.

Pastors Craig Gross and Mike Foster buy booth time at the country's adult industry events, handing out Bibles that abandon the traditional cover for one that reads, "Jesus Loves Porn Stars."

Good article- I appreciate that someone is having the guts in the church to deal with it! I have been told that pastors in particular are susceptible to porn. It seems there is some confusion as to why porn is such a big deal. See the website: http://www.iquestions.com/video/view/392 for an interesting psychological explanation as to "what's the big deal" with a picture on a page/screen. There are others on this same website that are worth checking out on the subject too.

Porn, like many other industries, has it's upsides and downsides. If you're in the industry, you need to learn how navigate and handle it. If you go about this the right way, a career in porn will be full of positive experiences for you. However if you go about navigating the industry in the wrong way, a career in porn will be no career at all. Bottom line - Be Smart! And Jenna Jameson who is a friend of mine, is extremely intelligent :)

Wow - I too, am glad to see real Christians meeting those in search of answers where they are - I think a Christian should be careful while ministering though - like being at the convention. It may be fine for one Christian to go into a bar to minister, but for another Christian it might be too much, and they might fall into an alcohol addiction them self. Our church is trying to find new ways of serving real people's real needs as well, and some churches will be called to serve those caught in porn, other churches will be called to serve those with substance addictions, others to the homeless...

The founders of xxxchurch.com are a great group of people. They are really helping porn stars who are looking for a way out of the industry. You don't have to think porn is wrong to know that many people in the industry get hurt and are used and abused. It is these people that the XXXChurch reaches out to. Great article. :)

I have no idea why this is such a big deal. Correct me if I'm wrong but the presence of porn hasn't ruined the world just yet, has it? Also, the statistics on page 2 of this article are taken grossly out of their context and are not comparatively useful in the slightest. There are a lot more things involved than what the writer would imply.

"Sex videos should be out there and there should be more women friendly porn available too... porn that is intimate and loving without being degrading and disgusting" Yeah, good luck with that *rolls eyes*.

very well written and incisive article. As to the posting about why a Christian would have porn...well Christians are all human and we struggle on a daily basis with how we should behave and how we do behave. It's great that there are Christians evangelizing, not judging. Good job!
