Have you heard the crazy story? Yahoo headline states that cell phones could be the blame for the honey bee shortage. This seemed kind of strange to me! On Livescience.com a farmer states that 6 years ago there were plenty of bees but now they are diminishing. The first cell phone call was made in 1973 over 34 years ago. So if cell phones were linked to the bee shortage then it would have happened a lot sooner. Many scientists argue that the reason is because many people did not't have cell phones years ago. This could be true considering that the number of cell phone subscribers in 2003 was 159 million according to U.S. Census Bureau. George L. Carlo states that the link to the shortage and cell phones are caused by the signals the cell phones radiate. When the bees are exposed to the cell phone signals it disorientates them prohibiting them from finding their hive. After not finding nutrients that the bee needs to survive, it just dies. Studies show that 25% of the 24 billion bees are being affected. I do not know about you but I think that 6 billion bees will still get the job done. However most people don't realize really what the bees actually do besides sting them. They visit the flowers collecting nectar and pollen and take them to other flowers which increase their seed and fruit growth (Livescience.com). Basically they make the plants grow bigger and better. Who knew a little bug could do that? With the shortage of the bees it could put a big damper on our crops which could make the prices of fruits and vegetables go up. I do not know about you but we can not afford for the prices to go any higher but neither can we afford to turn off our cell phones. To tell America to stop using their cell phones is like telling a person to cut off their right arm. It's just ridiculous! There are many other reasons for the shortage of bees like mites, pesticides, and the horrendous hurricanes that have come through. The worst thing about the shortage of bees is that a lot of farmers who normally plant fruits and vegetables and starting to turn to tobacco plants. Tobacco plants don't need pollination to produce. I personally do not want any more of tobacco plants. There are plenty of people dying from lung cancer due to it already. So what do we do as Americans to help stop the shortage? Well you have two options. Turn off your cell phone or Become a Bee Keeper! For me turning my cell phone off seems to hurt less.

I don't believe the cell phones are the problem, do you? I've read numerous times that mites are killing the bees and I prefer to believe that. Cell phones might cause some problems, but I find it hard to believe that's one problem it causes. I'm not ready yet to give up my cell phone or to become a beekeeper!
