You would have never guessed Kelly Clarkson came from American Idol nearly 5 years ago when she released her 2004 mammoth hit producer album Breakaway, catching herself 5 Top 10 singles, 2 Grammy's, and selling 16 million copies worldwide. We first experienced her inner Pat Benatar when we cranked the volume to the electrifying "Since U Been Gone," then on to the heartbroken rocker "Behind These Hazel Eyes." Now all eyes are on Kelly again as she returns with a vengance on her upcoming record, My December. The latest release from Kelly, "Never Again," follows on the formula that made Breakaway such a hit album, but turned up a notch or two. The song is loud, angry, bitter, and delivers a warning and a bitchslap to all who cross her, or at least to those who cheat on her and dump her. At first listen, it is a little too much to swallow. But as we found with "Since U Been Gone," all it takes is a few good listens before you're hooked in with Kelly's heartbreak, Kelly's rage, and Kelly's powerhouse vocals.
The first attack lays on the lover who strayed away from Clarkson. Just listen as she sings "I hope the ring you gave to her turns her finger green/ I hope when you're in bed with her you think of me/ I would never wish bad things but I don't wish you well." By the time Kelly gets out what she's really feeling, her anger is too much to handle and she explodes into the furious catchy rock chorus where she says it must suck to see her face everywhere. Clarkson isn't done there. Following into the second verse she takes a turn at the other woman. "A trophy wife oh how cute/ Ignorance is bliss/ But when your day comes and he's through with you/ And he'll be through with you/ You'll die together but alone."
Once the bridge comes in, the song takes a complete opposite direction and stops all the production to catch her breath before she starts to vent all over again. "Never again will I kiss you/ Never again will I want to/ Never again will I love you/ Never." Consisting of just a drum and bass riddle, she chants her way through.
