In order to learn more about Narcotics Anonymous, I attending a Narcotics Anonymous meeting. The following are my observations of a typical Narcotics Anonymous meeting and I have maintained the anonymity of all of those persons present and have tried to give my honest first impressions of Narcotics Anonymous for those interested.

The Atmosphere

When I came into the meeting place for this Narcotics Anonymous meeting I felt a little ill at ease and was expecting the same sort of welcome as at AA. This might have been because I was a little early but there was certainly a little more overall tension at this meeting although I still can’t pinpoint the reason for it. There was a smaller group than I expected and it was clear that there were several other newcomers or at least those who were not entirely familiar with Narcotics Anonymous. Other than these more internalized perceptions, the atmosphere in general at the Narcotics Anonymous meeting was what could be expected with the requisite chairs and tables arranged in a circular pattern so everyone could face one another. There was coffee and store-bought cookies that were free for the taking and many people did help themselves, especially to the coffee. After the Narcotics Anonymous meeting, everyone helped put things back in order and there was a general feeling of everyone working together. There was a discussion about some of the participants having coffee after the next meeting and I was invited to come along, which was a nice gesture. After the Narcotics Anonymous meeting everything seemed much more relaxed and I did not feel the tension I did upon arriving.

As a member of NA, we do welcome visitors to some of our meetings, however we are not to be observed as if from another planet. I am glad you were welcomed, why you felt the need to display your experience on the internet is just odd to me. NA is a life saving program and a way of life for many recovering addicts. Feeling invaded upon is not a very good feeling. We are not some cult, with grave deep dark secrets. We are people trying to live life on life's terms with the help of 12 steps, 12 traditions, and spiritual principals. Not to be exploited in any way shape or form, for it is a God given program to me and many others.

I can see why some of your opinions about the meeting you attended would be your overall view of NA, however as a member of NA I need to tell you that although the literature and some of the things we do are very similar in all of our meetings, each group has autonomy which means they create their format. By no means does NA represent Christianity. We have members of all faith and no faith. I am glad you were welcomed. An open NA meeting means that visitors are welcome to attend, not that the discussion is open. A closed meeting is for addicts only. And it is not important for any member to memorize our literature. After hearing the same things over and over you just learn the info, nothing is required. I hope you had a nice experience.
