How to Promote a Club or Band in Your Town

Be a Hollywood Promoter in Your Small Town

Have you have ever been to an exclusive Hollywood or New York night club where the only way you could get in is if your name was on the VIP list? And unless you were on the right list you had to wait in a long line. Then the
all powerful promoter walks out and scans the line. Everyone try their best to look like they are one of the “In-crowd” as the promoter points and says, “You, you and you … in.”

One of two thoughts may have crossed your mind as you are left standing out in the cold. The first is who does he or she think they are? I’m by far better looking then that one.” Or you may have thought; “Now it must be awesome to be that promoter.” If you’re stuck on the first thought, you have more issues then this article can cover.

I’ve been a club promoter for over 4 years now. I don’t promote at any one club. Why limit yourself? If you promote for one club, you are basically their employee. I’m going to show you how to work your own hours, have fun and for the most part determine your own income.

When I started out there was no one who was willing to help me out by showing me the ropes. I wasn’t looking for any super secret insider scoops; I just wanted to know the basics. I finally got a gig as a street promoter, passing out fliers, for a cabaret show. I did what most street promoters fail to do. I closed my mouth and opened my eyes. The biggest mistake most street promoters make is over selling themselves. They spend countless hours trying to so the promoter that they can run the entire shows them selves.

Promoters are very secretive creatures, and for good reason. Our job is super easy. The street promoter does half the work. However, as a promoter you assume all of the risk. A failed event can cost a promoter anywhere from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand. However a sucessful event can bring in up to $3,000.00 at the door. I’ll show you how to minimize you losses latter in this article.

Besty, I would also hire sub-promoters and have them promote the club's entertainment calendar each week. Pay the sub-promoters a percentage of the door also. The more sub-promoters you use the greater the number of people you will be able to reach. You need to be aware that you may end up pushing out your old customers and bringing in an entirely new crowd. The reason why most club go under and can't recover is because they are unwilling to change the type of bar they are. For example, a bar that was a country western bar may have to go rock n' roll and bring in an entirely new customer base to survive. SO to save your club, you may have to reinvent it. The best way to do that is with sub-promoters and using them to create a new customer base for you. Good luck

I would like to thank everyone for the sucess of this article. This is one of the most sought after articles on the Internet. I have received emails from many of my readers with questions. It goes into greater details than the article ever can. It will be on sale Winter 2008. You can get it now online at Lulu.com. How to Become a Nightclub Promoter, ISBN 978-0-557-00147-7. Excellent! great article...I have a great full-time job so I don't need to promote full-time but since I am a partier & I want to offer quality events to my guest why not make money from it & so my research started here & I'm glad I came a cross this article.

i believe both is right...although flyers dont have as much affect of people as it once did it still works, on the other hand there are other ways to get your event out there without having to spend alot of money on advertising. one of the most useful tools out there is Myspace, and facebook. knock it all you want, if you look at 3/4 of the pics on myspace its of people drunk at a club! hahaha alot of event, music festivals, and bars use this site everyday and always have really good turn outs.

I've recieved several emails about the comments made by Chicago1. I usually don't comment on my articles, unless I'm responding to a question. Everything I stated in my article in 2006 is still vaild today in 2008. In this business you will always find those who will try to scare you off. If you notice, Chicago1 offered you no advice for what works better then fliers. All he did was try to scare you off. Just as a matter of record, there are those in large cities who can make $10,000.00 to $20,000 and up on a weekend night ... We call them club owners. A good club owner in a major city can make up to $100,000.00. So, maybe Chicago1 should open his own club? Just a thought. Read the comments of the others and you will see that what I'm telling you really does work. Maybe one of my readers are giving Chivago1 a run for his money? I"m just thinking out loud here, but why else would a sucessful promoter be surfing the Internet for an article about how to become a club promoter?

Fliers are ineffective. However, it is 2008 now, and the article was written in 2006. IF YOU ARE READING THIS ARTICLE AND DOING YOUR FIRST EVENT. ....DO ....NOT..FOLLOW THOSE INSTRUCTIONS!! ..I am a promoter in downtown Chicago and believe me, if you do what you're told to do in this article, you WILL fail miserably! $500-1500 a night in HOLLYWOOD? I make anywhere from $2,000-$10,000 a night on a weekly basis...
