Some motherboard manufacturers are even tapping into the graphics card processing capability to boost the PC's performance.

The most noticeable differences in graphics card are of course the brand and standard set by two graphics card giants - ATI Technologies Inc and nVidia Corp. Both of these companies are trying to outdo each other which indirectly benefit the consumers.

Of course the processing capability of the graphics card is important - The higher the processing capability, the faster the graphics card. However, you should also look at the suffixes at the end of model numbers, such as GT, LE, GS, GTX, XT, and XTX. These suffixes will reveal the memory clock speeds and pipelines which also affects the performance of a graphics card.

The amount of pixels generated by each graphics card can also be used as a benchmark. Newer generation graphics card can churn out billion of pixels per second. Some even are equipped with SLI capability which doubles the graphics performance significantly.

When choosing the right graphics card, think of generally what are your daily tasks? Would it require a super computer with high graphics processing capability or you just need a graphics card for normal spreadsheet?

Heavy gamers have the tendency of getting the latest graphics card of the market. If you are one of these gamers, pick a graphics card which has SLI capability. In this case, strap two graphics card together through the SLI cable. Take note however, that it might costs you a bomb.

For normal spreadsheet you don't even need to specifically purchase the latest graphics card. Try getting a motherboard which has a built-in graphics card and it will serve you right.
