John Phillips / Mackenzie Phillips Incest Story: Does Mackenzie Still Love Her Father?
"Don't Hate My Father" Mackenzie Phillips Pleads as She Releases Her New Book, "High on Arrival"
"Don't hate my father," Mackenzie Phillips told People magazine in an apparent effort to ameliorate the damaging words about her father, John Phillips, that she had written in her new tell-all, High On Arrival. Not only does Mackenzie Phillips accuse her father, a member of the legendary folk rock band the Mamas and the Papas, of rape (which, by its very definition, suggests incestuous rape), but she also points the finger of blame at him for getting her hooked on drugs. High On Arrival was released to bookstores Wednesday and Mackenzie Phillips appeared on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" to promote it. There were hints and nudges throughout the media that she would reveal a family secret, but it is doubtful that anyone would have thought of incestuous rape. The drug allegation was not that surprising. John Phillips was a self-admitted drug addict. In fact, when Mackenzie Phillips began having drug-related problems that would lead to her being fired from the hit situation comedy "One Day At A Time," she and her father would enter a rehabilitation program together.
But the allegation of incest was a bit shocking. But the most shocking part of the allegation that encompasses the entirety of MacKenzie Phillip's admission that she had an incestuous affair may not be the affair or the alleged rape that started it (on her wedding night). Mackenzie Phillips admitted that the incestuous affair, which lasted ten years, became consensual.
John Phillips died in 2001. Mackenzie Phillips held the secret of her affair with her father until 1997 when she confided in her sister, Chynna Phillips. Chynna Phillips corroborates the story that she found out about the affair from Mackenzie, who said she had to tell someone. Chynna Phillips, he sings as part of the pop group Wilson Phillips, told Us Weekly, "But I knew it was true. I mean, who in their right mind would make such a claim if it wasn't true?"
