The year started out as a scary one for many pet owners. Veterinarians were being baffled by cases of animals being brought in because of vomiting, diarrhea, lack of appetite, extreme thirst and lethargy. Many of these
cases could not be cured and the animals ended up dying as a result of Kidney failure. But why? The truth came out on March 16, 2006 when Menu Foods, a supplier of products to many pet food companies put out a voluntary recall on many of the foods it manufactured at two of its facilities between Dec. 3, 2006, and March 6, 2007.
Menu foods claimed that they had gotten products from a Chinese supplier that may have been contaminated by Melamine, a toxic product used in many plastics and fertilizers, and some foods may have been contaminated with traces of rat poison. At first it seems like only canned dog and cat food products were involved in the recall, but now many dry food products have been added to the recall list. Not only cheap store brands have been recalled, but many of the more expensive pet food brands have been recalled as well.
Some of the brands recalled are Eukaneuba, Authority, Hill's Science Diet, Iams, Nutro Max, Alpo Gravy Train, and many generic store bands such as Wal Mart's Ol'Roy brand. For a full list of all the recalled pet food brands, go here. There are over 100 recalled pet food brands in total.
Some of the symptoms of the pet food poisoning include vomiting, lethargy, thirst, diarrhea, and lack of appetite. If your dog or cat exhibits any of these signs, take it to your veterinarian immediately. Many of the poisoning cases are treatable if caught in time.
