Black Forest Hound

The Black Forest Hound, also referred to as the Slovakian Hound, is a breed that originated in the Czech Republic to be used primarily in hunting wild boar in the mountains. This dog is a skilled scent dog and is of the working class. They are not ideal as only family pets, since they instinctively want to have a defined purpose and a job to do. They are not as naturally obedient as some of the other hound dog breeds and will require firm and consistent training with an owner that knows how to establish him or herself as the "leader of the pack", so to speak. While they may want to please the master, they are quite independent and rather strong-willed.

This dog is not aggressive in general, but can make a wonderful surveillance dog due to their strong sense of loyalty to their owner. They are seemingly fearless and will protect their owner at all costs to themselves. Proper training should begin early in the dog's life so that it does not become over-protective and willful. The Black Forest Hound is extremely intelligent and will train well as long as there is a strong hand at the helm and a consistency that will enable them to know what is expected.

This breed is of medium size, standing between seventeen and twenty-two inches tall at the withers and weighing between forty-two and fifty-five pounds. According to breed standards, the coat is short and wiry in texture, colored black with tan markings and have a healthy sheen. The eyes should be dark brown or black and set deep in the head. The ears are slightly rounded and dropping at the tips. The teeth should meet in a scissor or even bite. The body should be well-muscled and strong in appearance with a straight back. The tail should be fairly long and carried horizontally.
