Every town has a local pizza place or two that stands pies above the rest. The competition was tough with over twenty restaurants in contention, but we narrowed it down to just five Tucson piz

za places that stand pies above the rest. Each restaurant was judged on three things: service, time it took to receive the pizza, and of course, taste.

- Five: Magpies Pizza, 7315 North Oracle Road, 520-297-2712. This one was judged by a delivery, which arrived extremely promptly (within twenty minutes.) Every Magpies employee I encountered was friendly, and the pizza was delicious. Plus, Magpies has several locations all over town to serve.

- Four: Mama's Pizza, 7965 North Oracle Road, 520-297-3993. For this carryout order, the staff at this locally owned restaurant was extremely friendly and the time it took to receive our order was minimal. (In fact, my accomplice pouted because she only got to play one game on the arcade machine. Go figure.) Plus, the monstrous family size pizza not only had an amazing crust, it was enough to feed a large crowd.

- Three: Sergeant Pepperoni's Pizza, 2860 West Ina Road, 520-297-4425. Probably my favorite of all the places we judged on takeout, and one of the places I've visited most for pizza over the years. I have never seen the staff unprofessional or unfriendly, and they have never once messed up an order. Great pizza, but their truly amazing quality is their chicken wings.

- Two: Rosatti's Pizza, 1838 East Sixth Street, 520-622-2200. My feelings on Rosatti's Pizza is a double edged sword. While this particular location of their restaurant made our best list, their Northwest Tucson location failed miserably (an hour and a half late delivery, and the wrong pizza that was cold.) So, this recommendation is entirely for the Sixth Street location, which is right near the University of Arizona. (The Tanque Verde location was not surveyed and each location is under different management.) The staff was wonderful, and the order arrived promptly. Rosatti's Chicago style pizza is only the icing on the cake. They offer a variety of foods including pastas and sandwiches, and also offer catering.

Good article. Magpies used to be number 1 in Tucson, but seems to have fallen off a little.
