Was the 'Wizard of Oz' Hanging Real?
It's the 70th anniversary of the 'Wizard of Oz' movie, an American classic, which means a few theaters will be showing a remastered version of the film. This offers conspiracy theorist the perfect chance to see a large-scale version of an infamous scene in the movie where a munchkin hanging was allegedly caught on camera. But did a hanging really take place, or is the 'Wizard of Oz' hanging just an interesting urban legend?
The remastered version of 'Wizard of Oz' will have a much sharper image, so perhaps conspiracy theorists will be able to better see the munchkin hanging. Or maybe not.
All you really have to do is visit Snopes.com to learn all you need to know about the 'Wizard of Oz' hanging. There's an example of an E-mail forward about the hanging, which alleges that you can see a mysterious figure in black moving strangely through the trees while Dorothy and her friends are gleefully skipping down the yellow brick road. The person writing the E-mail states that they spotted a hanging figure in the background during this scene, and that it was a munchkin that committed suicide due to unrequited love.
It's fitting that the 'Wizard of Oz' hanging is getting a lot of attention on the 70th anniversary of the movie, considering that Snopes states the munchkin suicide rumor started back on its 50th anniversary. When 'Wizard of Oz' fans were able to stop, rewind, and pause their VHS tapes in 1989, more people were able to see the mysterious dark figure in the background during the notorious shot. Snopes points out, however, that there would have been no munchkins present on set when the scene was shot, and that it would have been impossible for someone on set to not have noticed the incident. This would have led to the scene being stopped and reshot. And don't forget that no one involved with the film has come forward and said that a hanging took place.
