The Arkansas Lottery starts today, in a move that could put a tight squeeze on Mr. T's on Riverside in Cardwell, Missouri.
I personally frequented Mr. T's while attending college at Arkansas State. It was only 40 miles from campus, and had there been an Arkansas Lottery, I probably wouldn't have gone there half as much.
The Arkansas Lottery will start with four scratch-off tickets, and then progress as Power Ball plans to launch on October 31. In December, pick-3 and pick-4 games may become available.
The Arkansas Lottery comes as a shock to many Arkansans who have been shopping for lotto tickets in bordering states for years.
If Craighead County, AR allows alcohol sales, Mr. T's may feel an even tighter pinch. Many Craighead County, AR residents flock to Mr. T's for their beer, liquor, and lotto tickets. Those living in Greene County, Arkansas seek out lottery tickets at Mr. T's as well.
According to Area Wide News, "All net proceeds from the lottery will go toward the Arkansas Challenge Scholarship through the Arkansas Department of Higher Education.
All Arkansas Lottery scholarship recipients will receive scholarships or grants for non-profit, public and private, two and four-year colleges and universities in the state of Arkansas, according to the Arkansas Lottery Commission Web site."
Arkansans have been funding education in bordering states for years, and legislators finally recognized that the Arkansas Lottery is one way education can beat budget cuts.
For now, the Arkansas Lottery will be very simple. However, expect the Arkansas Lottery to expand in terms of games offered. There are many rural areas in Arkansas where there isn't much to do, and the Arkansas Lottery will bring a little excitement to those areas.

I can't believe there is a state in this country that still doesn't have its own lottery! Until today, that is.
