How Helium.com Denied Me Over $300 in Cash, Content and Contest Winnings - How to Avoid Getting Banned or Scammed

Helium is Full of Hot Air: Writer Beware! Read This Testimonial Before Writing!

This is the story of how I lost $300, almost 300 articles and hundreds of hours of my time to Helium.com. Additionally, Helium has kept the revenue-generating content I submitted to their site, but refuses to reimburse me for my contributions. Once you read this you should either (1) be
convinced that Helium.com is a scam site and not worth investing your time and potential into or (2) know how to avoid losing what you do make on Helium. A potential participant should be immediately suspicious: one Helium.com-sponsored Google Adsense links claim you can "Write to Win $15,000." This is highly misleading. Even if someone took first place for every week of their Write to Win contest they would only win $1,800.

Nonetheless, I spent a long, hard week writing to win just one $300 prize. I was sitting at my computer at 6:30 AM (PST) on the last day of the contest, finishing off what I thought was my last submission (of between 100 and 200 articles for the contest alone). With two and a half hours to go, I was positioned somewhat securely in first place, poised to win the $300 first prize. I knew the person in second place might overtake me, but was willing to accept the $200 prize if it came to that. Suddenly, looking at the contestant positions on the site, I noticed someone I hadn't seen all week on the roster - and they were quickly climbing up the ranks!

Thanks for the article -- I've always wondered how writers on Helium've always gotten away with terrible writing (even basics like grammar and spelling) and blatant plagiarism yet "float" to the top! Though I could probably play their game, I doubt it'll be worth my time and ethical consciousness.

If you can write that many articles, why waste your time at these nickel and dime sites? This article shows me you can write reasonably clearly, which is more than I can say for 95% of the population, and that counts for a lot more than any of these sites will pay you. Living well is the best revenge! I hope you moved on to a *real* writing career!

Ok, Craig, I read you. Chrissy and Carol, I can see you both clearly too. Where do I go from here? I'd been travelling in six (6) web territories for writers [yes, 6], for the last 3 months prudently reading comments of authors, like you, whom I admire. I like that sharp tongue and no dancing around the Christmas tree! I think I will relax for a while andgo on looking. Maybe, when we can put up a classic like "How to Blow a Town", then, all these guys will take notice. I'll try a milder one soon, and see what happens. I always remember the Golden Rule: "He who owns the gold, makes the rules." I'll do my best.

I think the helium community tampers with the rating, They show favortism toward their favorite writers. They keep them top ranked to receive the stars and so on.

Thanks for this article! Frustrated with the very low payments from AC, I joined Helium this morning and have seemingly spent the last 4 hours in vain!!!!!!!!! I've posted, rated, etc., and it still seems like this site is not only a non-lucrative endeavor, but somewhat exploitive as well... Thanks again for this article!

I have given up with Helium, I had an article removed for plagirism, I followed all of the instructions given by the folk who requested the article, they gave us the source and links to follow and told us what they wanted mentioning, I used the name of a guy, who was the inventor and that is the only thing I used the rest was researched and written by me, so someone rated and saw the name, checked it out, flagged it up and hey presto, I am prevented from entering into the Marketplace scramble. I then noted during my rating time that two articles that had obviously been turned down by the buyer were full of copied statements from a website, I pointed this out and was ignored. I have earned $0.16 from my work, I have been published in a quality medical magazine and others, I therefore feel my work must be ok and certainly worth more than that, and I get so cross when I look at number 1 and it is so badly presented and written in very poor English that I am beginning to feel insulted by t

Thanks for your comments. I somewhat agree. Now, if I get burnt, I only have my risk taking to blame. I wouldn't go for those contests. They reminded me of the inhumanity of the dance marathons of the the 1920's. The worst part was having to rate some of these articles that diminished greatly in quality as the contest deadline drew nearer. I'm not going to write about the negatives of my experience here and now. I would like to compare notes, though. I am an AC producer, so you can find me easily. If you'd like to email - I would appreciate it greatly. p.s. I believe, that in today's society with materialistic onslaught of electronic gadgets to buy, there is but a thin line between what you wrote and spam. The treatment you got was unfair. I have an article there that was surpassed by a woman who plagarized my concept, and no one has mentioned it. I didn't bother. The article is something about decorating your house for springtime. The copied part is about looking

Wow, thank you so much for this info. I have been considering writing for Helium but now may avoid it altogether!
