Bon jour-Greetings, and welcome to the article which I hope will teach you a new trick or two about your fruit and vegetable produce. When writing this article I'm drawing upon roughly seven years of professional culinary experience. However that was many years ago, and at present the only food preparation I do is around the house with the little lady. That is, when I'm not learning tricks from her when she's taking the lead in the kitchen.

We all love fruit. We don't all love vegetables. So without question, I'll start with tricks involving fruit. And how many of us wouldn't put oranges right up there on the list as our favorite. However, how many of us have a little trouble when we're trying to peel 'em? We love oranges, but we don't necessarily love the membranes contained within. I have a cutting technique that will eliminate those membranes when setting out fresh oranges on a fruit plate.

What about "quite possibly the world's most perfect food," bananas? I beg to differ, Avocados have no equal in the fruit world in my book. Nonetheless, that is how the banana industry advertised its fruit for many years. Didn't think there were any tricks to be had for a fruit that's so easy to peel, did you! I've got a really simple one in my bag of tricks that you won't soon forget.

Now that I've mentioned avocados, I'll include a trick that will allow you to get that big hunkin seed out without making a mess of the fruit around it, so that it's nice and presentable. O.K., I did say fruit "and" vegetable tricks. Lastly, I'll include one vegetable trick. Hey, four fruit tricks to one vegetable trick is about right, wouldn't you say.

Did You Know?
Carrots should be chewed all the way down to nearly a pulp in order to get the nutritional benefits out of them.

I figured that about carrots, ever since I chewed one till it tasted like a vitamin A supplement. Thanks for confirming :)

Didn't know that about rolling the oranges! I just thought rolling citrus was to get more juice out of them (as Kelly said below)...I had no idea it made them easier to peel! Thanks for the tips!

Any tips for getting the most out of a mango? Eh, nm....part of the reason I luv them so much has to do with the sticky mess on a hot summer day. Great avocado tip though....not sure I can pull that off though.

I hadn't tried this particular avocado technique, but I will. Now I'm hungry.

As a vegan, I'm required to like fruits and veggies (except for celery, cilantro and coconuts, which I just can't abide), but it's a hassle sometimes to get to the "meat" of them. Great hints you got here. Thanks!

I peel bananas from the bottom. I learned the trick somewhere along the way and it is much easier than peeling from the top! Great article. (Avocados are the best food ever!)

these are great tips. I don't much care for bananas, oranges or avocados. yuck. but my kids do and they occasionally ask me to peel them for them. well, not the bananas but the others. I roll my lemons on the counter before I cut them in slices or in half to get all the juice out of them. :)
