Two years ago, Williamsburg (Virginia) added a new resort area called the Great Wolf Lodge. It is a huge log cabin look structure set in a beautiful wooded area just off the Interstate (64). I've always wanted to go to their just to check it out, even though I knew I'd never to able to afford to actually stay there.

The lodge is a one of eight similar properties located throughout the United States and just over the Canadian border. The Great Wolf Lodge formula combines the concept of a roadside hotel with a focus on family fun.

Nothing exemplifies the "fun" atmosphere of the lodge better than its huge 67,000 square foot indoor Bear Track Landing water park. With its complex of six pools, it provides the ultimate in water delights. There is a four-story, twelve-level, interactive tree house water fort called Fort MacKenzie. It features over 60 guest-activated water effects and eight waterslides, which include three tube slides, three kiddie slides, and two body slides.

Take the 450-foot, River Canyon Run that twists and turns until it dumps into the pool; ride the waves in Beaver Tail lake; or float on Crooked Creek's lazy river. There is also the Cub Paw Pool, which is perfect for small children because it provides shallow depth safety and enough toys to keep the most inquisitive child happy. There is even an indoor climbing wall for those who are athletically inclined.

After a day of splashing good fun, the family can head to the 7,000 square foot Northern Lights Arcade, which features more than 100 video games with black lights that light up glowing carpets. Kids can head to the Cub Club for special activities planned just with them in mind. And every night is story night in the Grand Lobby, where children are calmed and lulled into a state of mind that prepares them for a perfect night's sleep

I really wish I had the chance to visit Virginia. I was supposed to visit this summer with my grandmother so she could show me some of our family history but she had a stroke this past fall and now we won't be going. It sounds like a wonderful place to visit.

We drove past this more than once last year when we visited Colonial Williamsburg and Busch Gardens; I wish I'd realized what it was! This would have been a perfect place to stay for the three days we were waiting for our van to be repaired.
