In 2002, two rival Olympic ice skaters (Michaels & MacElroy) fight it out at an awards ceremony and are permanently banned from men's single competition. They find a loophole that will allow them to qualify as a pairs team. MacElroy's old coach thinks that Michaels & MacElroy would make a perfect team to compete as the first ever male-male team. Their personalities clash constantly but their desire for gold pulls them together to overlook their differences. When I first saw the previews, I thought that this looked very corny - typical Will Ferrell. And paired with Jon Heder, there's is a match made in Heaven, or Hell for me. I just CANNOT stand Heder in Napoleon Dynamite! Mostly it's his deep, goofy voice, like Goofy in drag.
After seeing "Blades of Glory", all in all, it isn't that bad of a comedy. It has it moments but, for me, it's more of a chuckle-filled comedy than a bust-your-gut type comedy like "Wild Hogs". Whereas "Wild Hogs" is a situational comedy with a lot of character humor, "Blades of Glory" is mostly just a situational comedy with some attempts at goofy, kindergarten-level antics. I prefer the former to the latter but many love the type of humor employed in "Blades of Glory". This is typical Ferrell comedy so, if you enjoy that, you'll surely enjoy this.
The story is simple and unoriginal but Ferrell & Heder put their own unique spin on it. They play two ice skaters with a bitter rivalry for one another. Will Ferrell plays Chazz Michael Michaels, a rude, cocky sex addict who led a life of crime before becoming a skater. Jon Heder plays Jimmy MacElroy, a "nice" guy who was an orphan that was adopted by a millionaire tycoon for the sole purpose of training a skater to win gold. Ferrell plays the "dumber" of the two - he always messes up cliché terms such as "mind-bottling" instead of "mind-boggling".
At an Olympic competition, both tie for gold and are forced to share the medal & glory. But, their rivalry comes to a head at the awards ceremony and both fight it out and cause a spectacle. The icing board bans both from competing ever again. A funny cameo by Nancy Kerrigan takes place at the hearing.
