Don't Bash Women
Just because you're writing for a men's magazine doesn't mean that you can speak derivatively about women. Not only would you offend your readers if the article were to be published, but women editors are just as common at men's magazines as at women's. You can discuss the ways in which your readers can talk to or interact with women, but don't speak about the opposite sex as if it were less important.
You Don't Have to Be a Man
Just like men can write for women's magazines, women can write for men's magazines. In fact, some editors prefer to run at least one article written by a woman each month to give the publication a more well-rounded focus. For example, a local men's magazine here in Houston runs a monthly column written by a female dating expert. She gives men advice about the best places to meet women and how to strike up a conversation. If you're a women, don't discount the possibility of writing for men's magazines.
Keep a Masculine Undertone
The majority of people who read men's magazines are going to be men, so the overall tone of the article should have a masculine edge. This doesn't mean you need to talk about throwing back beers or growing chest hair, but you should acknowledge your audience as frequently as possible. Relate to your readers by mentioning things that men are most likely to feel, think or do; this will give you an edge when writing both your query letter and your article.
