'A root shall spring up from the stump of Jesse's lineage'. This Bible passage foretells the birth of the Messiah. During Advent, symbols are hung on the Jesse Tree to represent the story of Jesus. For free printable Jesse Tree devotional activities, I've listed internet links. Advent is the season of preparation for Christmas in the Church liturgical year. Catholics and many protestants observe and celebrate Advent in churches and homes, using the Advent Wreath and candles, an Advent Calendar and also the Jesse Tree.

The Jesse Tree is an ancient Advent devotion. Each day of Advent, Bible passages are read, beginning with the story of Creation, Adam and Eve in the garden, Noah and the ark. The stories continue on through the the Old Testament, highlighting important persons, events and prophecies about Jesus the Messiah. Traditionally, these Bible Stories also include key Biblical figures in the actual genealogy of Jesus. Jesus's earthly father, St. Joseph was 'of the house and lineage of David' the son of Jesse'.

The Jesse Tree can be made in many ways. In times past, the Jesse Tree was the Christmas tree and was a full-size tree. Some families use a tree made of paper or a cloth banner with detachable ornaments. In our family I use a small table top tree with ornaments hand made ornaments and symbols that we add each day.
