I was watching this television show and one of the stories on it was about this woman who was suffering from spontaneous orgasms. It seem that she had no control of when or where they occurred. Some of the characters on this show seem envious of this. Other characters just seem interested. As the story went on, the woman was supposed to get an operation that would cure her.

As I watched this, I began to wonder. Could this be real? Is there such a thing as spontaneous orgasms?

I looked up the term and found that spontaneous orgasms means experiencing an orgasm without any physical stimulation. But what I didn't find is many stories on it.

I did find out that when this does occur, it only occurs in woman. Some articles went on to say that this was a good thing. They believed that if men could have an orgasm without participating in the what we consider normal love making acts. lovemaking would hardly ever occur.

I found a few cases where women claimed to be suffering from this spontaneous orgasm without doing anything to cause it. Some doctors believe that this could have been caused by friction from wearing tight fitting panty hose or pants.

I did find out that some medicines, especially anti-depressants such as Prozac, Zoloft and Wellbuturin can cause this. In a study, spontaneous orgasms was reported by 5% of patients taking these drugs. But the orgasms were not considered severe, they were more like light twinges. This is an unusual side effect for these kinds of medicines. Most people who are taking these medicines experiences the reverse effect, low sex drive and experience less orgasms or none. Another medicine L-dopa which is given to people to help control Parkinson's disease also has spontaneous orgasms listed as one of its side effects.

Are there any other factors that could cause a spontaneous orgasm? Some evidence proves that a seizure disorder could cause this to happen, too. But it does not happen often.

Takeaways
  • Some anti-depressants can have a side effect of spontaneous orgasms
  • The chemicals within our bodies can cause a reaction that could cause spontaneous orgasms.
  • Friction from tight fitting pants can cause a reaction like spontaneous orgasm
Did You Know?
One can teach their body to connect with their minds to achieve spontaneous orgasms.

actualll i watched it on greys anatomy,an medical educative movie.but i think it has to do with either an accident involving the spinal cord or any leision in the brain.and there coul also be other causes like hormonal or endocrine disorders.the kady in the movie had it 7 to 8 times in a day.anywhere, anytime and it happens to her like an epileptic seizures which happend when she was driving one day and ked to aserious accident.this is my own contibution.i think the neurosurgeon can do something to correct it.thanks.

yeah I have spontaneous orgasms. umm when I was a young child I was sexually active for a couple years. I did not have orgasms then, I was too young...but he did. Now many times when I have bad dreams, I have an orgasm. I thought that you had to have stimulation to have an orgasm but I was pretty sure that was what I was experiencing. I'm not the masturbating type, but I did it once and had another orgasm like the ones I have spontaneously. Porn also gives me orgasms sometimes.

I have spontaneous orgasms, but I enjoy them. They don't weird me out at all. And it feels really great. I've become really good at hiding when I have them in public, and when I'm alone or with my boyfriend it's just enjoyable. It happens even without mental stimulation.

yes, it happens during sleep around the time of ovulation or during pregnancy, due to greater flow of blood to the reproductive organs.

This is so typical of our society, explaining all from a medical standpoint. I have had spontaneous orgasms for about a yr. now. Sure there are phisiological factors involved in this but it very often is a spiritual-sexual phenomenon known as spontaneous kundalini awakening. So many of us are so afraid of anything that is beyond our control and understanding. This is a wonderful tool for self love and amazing spiritual growth and understanding. I would not medicate it away for anything.

anonymous - I fully agree. I have been on fluoxetine for about a year (have just come off) and it is during this time that it has happened. And like you, I felt they were sharp and painful. Part of me were thinking - it's an orgasm - it has to be good. But what I felt was pain.

I am 35 and have in the last year been having orgasms in my sleep. And while most of them are very nice, some are downright painful. In my dream I am very sexually aroused and find myself coming harder than ever. It is so strong it wakes me up and then just continues. I know, some might say I have found the ultimate happiness, but when it goes on and on it gets really painful. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

I have them frequently. I have for a year now. I can be sleeping or awake, be clothed or not. It happens when it wants, out of the blue. My boyfriend can be there or I can be alone. If he is there all he has to do is just suggest anything to do with sex and it happens. He can just touch me very lightly, non sexually even, and it happens. It doesnt hurt or anything, you just dont want to be in the wrong place, LOL. This has come about since I fell in love with this man. Things can happen when you find the right person, your body changes because of love. There doesnt have to be another explanation, this I believe.

I came across this site looking for answers, because i have orgasms in my sleep so frequently, and have for many years. They do wake me, and happen without any physical stimulation. I am very inclined to think that I am having these because of a hormonal issue. This is because of the timing of these orgasms, for example-I have them during menstruation, or right before it, and during ovulation.

i have this, but i can mentaly stimulate it without any "sexual" or "physical" thoughts, its more abstract. and i can only do this when my body/brain gives me a "beginning". sometimes it happens without any stimulating wham within 2 or 3 seconds. i also read about it on wikipedia, and coincedentaly i have a spinabifida (very very light version with no paralysis)

This used to happen occasionally to me in my sleep when I was taking a cocktail different psychotropic meds (prescribed, in an attempt to find something that worked). It's not as great as it may seem - the orgasms were sharp and sudden, completely devoid of any erotic context or "buildup", and actually were a bit painful. It was a purely physical reaction that appeared out of nowhere and I found it disturbing more than anything else, as if I weren't in control of my own body. It basically weirded me out.
