U2 has been one of rocks leading bands over the course of 27 years, originating from Ireland. Along those years, they have earned countless Grammy Awards and No. 1 songs worldwide. These songs are amo
ngst their best hits, and some you may not know unless you own their albums or compilations.
1. I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
When I first started getting into U2, I never knew that this song I had been hearing for years was U2. It is taken from their album The Joshua Tree that has spawned many hits. This song charted at #1 in the US and # 6 in the UK in 1987. To me, I find this song inspirational as described in a few lines of the lyrics "I have spoken with the tongue of angels/ I have held the hand of the devil/ It was warm in the night/ I was cold as a stone." And then again in "I believe in the Kingdom Come/ Then all the colours will bleed into one/ Bleed into one/ But yes, I'm still running." Any list of U2 songs would not be complete without this song.
2. Pride (In The Name Of Love)
Taken from their 1984 album The Unforgettable Fire, "Pride" only reached #33 on US charts, but remained an anthem through-out the 80s era. Pride is one of the most unworthy human traits so I find it strange to call a song "Pride." "Early morning, April four/ Shot rings out in the Memphis sky/ Free at last, they took your life" is a factual inaccuracy because Dr. King was shot in the late afternoon.
3. Bad
This is a personal favorite of mine. While downloading U2 songs (before piracy was a big issue), I downloaded a song titled "Wide Awake." I placed it on my iPod as that title, until recently discovered the song was actually called "Bad" and had been on the Best of 1980-1990 CD I first owned. I have read about "Bad" but never realized it was THAT song I had forever called a different name. The song was actually written about heroin, a friend of Bono's squandered his intelligence and his gifts to heroin. It was cheaper than weed so teenagers enjoyed the smoking of it. "Bad" describes what it was like to feel that rush, to feel that elation, and then to go on to the nod, the awful sleep that comes with that drug, and then scream: "I'm wide awake, I'm wide awake, I'm not sleeping!"
