Like any family vacation, a visit to a water park comes with its challenges. Listed below are a few ideas that will not only help you through these challenges, but enable you to have a wonderful vacation at the water park.

Plan Ahead. If possible, visit the park during off season. Many parks with indoor facilities offer specials and packages during the winter months that will surprise you. Last May, our family paid under $200 for a night's stay, four park admissions, free supper and a full breakfast. You will most likely pay more and experience greater crowds during holidays and school breaks. Check a water parks' website for deals, and ask the operator for specials if you call.

Bring Your Own. Like any vacation water spot, prices are higher than normal once you enter the pool area. Bring your own sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses. If you're staying at the resort, bring plenty of snacks and beverages. Most water parks don't allow you to bring them into the actual water area, but you can always head back to your room for a break.

Be Patient. Expect to wait, especially in lines. There will be lines to check-in, at the rides, and to order your food, especially during busy seasons. Just take a deep breath, and live in the moment. Take the time to talk to your family. I recently overheard a dad recount a story to his two children in a line for a ride - the girls were riveted to his every word. Play I-Spy. Listen to your children's stories of how they went on the most awesome ride ever.

Be Flexible. Expectations run high, especially with children. If rides or food are not what you thought they would be, focus on the good points. Think of your vacation as an adventure - you never know what's around the corner.

Practice Courtesy. Good manners may be obvious to some, but some people really don't have a clue. Show your children by example how not to skip others in line, how to pick up their trash, and to say "please" and "thank you". Don't let other people's rude behavior ruin your day.
