SNL Letterman Jokes Make Letterman the Punchline
SNL Letterman jokes kicked off Weekend Update last night, though SNL limited their Letterman mockery. There was no SNL Letterman sketch, perhaps because few cast members could do a Letterman voice. However, SNL Letterman jokes are the first step towards figuring out how late night shows - and Letterman's rivals - will joke about the Letterman scandal in the days ahead. For SNL's Letterman jokes, they put a new spin on the Late Show hosts recurring bits.
Seth Meyers joked that Letterman did a "Stupid Human Trick" and introduced Craig Ferguson after having sex. But although SNL mocked David Letterman, no one actually impersonated him. Past cast members Norm MacDonald and Jeff Richards have done Letterman impressions on SNL, but no one in the current cast has done a Letterman voice.
If the Letterman scandal has even more dirty details in the next two weeks, SNL might feel free to do more Letterman bits, or have impressionists like Bill Hader, Jason Sudeikis or Darrell Hammond try to mock him. But SNL Letterman jokes will garner less attention than how Letterman's daily late night competition will joke about it.
Entertainment Weekly's Ken Tucker took a look at how David Letterman's fellow talk show colleagues addressed it on Friday. Letterman's former time slot rival Jay Leno did a few bits, while current rival Conan O'Brien largely left it alone - although guest Drew Carey got a zinger in. Bill Maher joked that Letterman at least looks better than Roman Polanski and John Phillips.
However, many wonder if Craig Ferguson will have any comments about the Letterman scandal this week, or whether he can joke about it. Ferguson's show is produced by Letterman's production company, WorldWide Pants, and directly follows the Late Show. Given Ferguson's improvisational monologues, a Letterman-themed routine could go in several interesting directions.
