Young Americans School of Self-Defense & Young Champions of America
Advertised as a non-profit corporation teaching a non-aggressive, non-counterstriking style of self-defense and safety, Young Americans Schools of Self-Defense is the largest children's self-defense and safety awareness program in the United States. This program is certified by the Young Americans Association of America, located in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Nationally, this organization is known as Young Champions of America. In Minnesota, Young Americans School of Self-Defense classes are taught by black belt instructors who emphasize self-defense rather than aggression and respect for parents and others in authority. Instructors have also been trained in the "Stay Out of Reach", "Run, Yell and Tell", and "Stranger Danger" curricula. Not only does this organization teach children in self-defense and safety, but personal esteem, respect for others, self-discipline, physical fitness, and positive familial relationships are also enhanced.
Children can be as young as three and as old as sixteen to participate in Young Americans School of Self-Defense in Minnesota. Thirty-two locations across the state teach one 45-minute class once a week during a 12-week fall/winter session, a 12-week spring session, and a slightly shorter summer session. Personal attention and instruction is given to each child in the class, training children in the skills they need to help defend themselves in an emergency and to compete in competitions.
Being that this is a non-profit corporation, tuition is fairly inexpensive, averaging $240 a year for all three sessions combined. Parents are allowed to pay each week, rather than up front; you are not required to pay for classes your child does not attend. However, children with perfect attendance are rewarded at the end of each session with a medal. Purchasing uniforms and sparring equipment is not required, but it will certainly help your child feel more involved and prepared. Fundraisers are optional to participate in as well, with proceeds helping families in need of financial support.
