Tuesday, April 24, 2007, around 2:00 PM, a full-scale prison riot began at the New Castle Correctional Facility in Indiana. According to sources, the cause is not yet known. Events leading up to this riot include a new influx of Arizona prisoners at the beginning of March. So far, 630 Arizona prisoners have been added to the New Castle Correctional Facility in Indiana. A transfer of Arizona prisoners is currently on hold as the full-scale prison riot rages on.

The New Castle Correctional Facility in Indiana is a medium-security prison. In March of 2007, Arizona and Indiana agreed to transfer 1,269 Arizona prisoners to the Indiana prison. The Indiana prison has a capacity for 2,400 prisoners. Before the transfer of Arizona prisoners began, the New Castle Correctional Facility contained approximately 1,040 prisoners.

A source, known as Deborah, claims that overcrowding issues are probably what have caused this prison riot. She claims that some of the overcrowding issues included prisoners without beds and not enough bathrooms. Deborah said she received a call from an Indiana prisoner who said he was scared and wanted the country to know that Indiana prisoners did not cause this riot. Deborah, while speaking to Neil Cavuto on Fox News Channel, begged Neil to make sure the media investigated this incident to the fullest by going to the New Castle Correctional Facility and interviewing the prisoners.

Katie Decker, Arizona Department of Corrections spokesperson, stated that some of the Arizona prisoners were not happy about being moved out of state to the New Castle Correctional Facility in Indiana. She also said that there hadn't been any trouble between the prisoners before today. Some sources think the Arizona prisoners unhappiness with having to move out of state may be partly responsible for the prison riot, however, Decker said it is too early to say for sure.

I'm always for the boys burning down the walls. It's just a sighn of the times. As far as they are inprisoned too far from home when was that a right? I truely believe prisoners have too many rights as it is. Probably the real reason for the riot. I thought they were moving their worst prisoners but its non- violent drug offenders.. Thats mesed up. although as far as the families of the convicts maybe being far from you will be good for them. These people got themselves into prison with you around. I know, I know every person there is innocent... yah I got you on that one. It isn't the prison industry making all of these people do time. It's the laws that we all live by. Maybe we sould second think our rules. Just don't cry for a better place for citizens when your main focus is the prisoners. Maybe if the rules were set up differently our prison numbers would be cut in half. How about the death penalty? Now people are going to argue the point. Waisting time, talking with no real acti

Has anyone bothered to ask the inmates "why?" this happened? My son is one of those AZ inmates. He was sent there 4/9, awaken at 3am, and with only the clothes on his back, put on a plane and sent away with no explaination. Since the day he arrived he has complained to me that these men are hungry. They are crammed into a dorm with lights on 24/7. He is not concerned about the lack of recreation, (what a B.S. story that was!), he is concerned about the lack of nutrition and unsanitary conditions. They have 2 toilets per 50 men. I could go on, but why?

I want to add also that our nation has the highest number of people incarcerated, could this be due to the prison complex industry? Big bucks are being made by big co-operations from prison slave labor. This riot? just the beginning I think

Some of the inmates were moved from Kansas to this facility. Imagine, your family has to travel this far to visit. Overcrowding, Yes, let the non violent drug offenders, from the "war on drugs" go!

Thanks Jamie, Khara, Charlotte and Kimberly! I would love to hear more about what caused this situation. the MSM is saying it is mostly due to the "No Smoking" policy.

Wow, Laura, that was interesting. While I have family members who are prison guards and my heart goes out to the injured staff, the lack of preparation you cite is nothing short of abominable. By making prisoners even more uncomfortable than they would otherwise be, every staff member and every prisoner was put at risk. I hope your son is okay.

Wow... I had no idea. I'm glad you are telling their side of the story as the mainstream media hasn't really done that yet. Going from Arizona to Indiana with the change in temp, no smoking rules and no personal space sounds like it could set off many tempers. I hope they get all this resolved very soon. Thanks for commenting and sharing your information.

My son was one of the inmates transferred to that facility. He has been there for exactly one week. He said that the facility was not set up and ready to receive the amount of people they did. The guards are all new and are in training. They have all been put on one large room with bunk beds on the walls and no space for any personal items. They have been made to eat their meals at various times of the day - depending on the schedule of the Indiana prisoners. They were even made to take their recreational time - 1 and 1/2 hours a day for some kind of exercise - at 10:00p.m. at night and ended at 11:15p.m, with temperatures in the 40's. They have not been allowed any access to library materials or had any Correctional Officer listen to them regarding continuing education or job opportunities. The facility was not organized enough to receive this many inmates at one time. Arizona inmates were allowed to smoke in Arizona prisons and then to have them suddenly moved to a new facilit
