Always plan your event far enough in advance so that everyone has enough advance notice to plan it into their schedule. Make sure that it is planned late enough in the year that there is no chance of it being a 50 degree day. You want the weather to warm enough that everyone will be comfortable. Make sure you have a backup plan in case of rain, whether it is an alternative date or grilling in your garage. Expecting to be outside in the rain is not going to be a popular idea.
Plan a menu. There are many types of food that taste great barbecued on a grill. Have several main dishes, just to satisfy the variety of tastes that will be attending your barbecue. Traditional picnic side dishes will be expected, however you may wish to try a few new picnic fixings. This is an area where you express your creativity with variations on traditional recipes and food presentation.
Have a plan for when you are going to begin preparing your food. You want to make sure everything has had ample time to thaw and that you are prepared. Decorating for your barbecue should also be included in your plan. Make sure you have purchased the necessary supplies and party favors that you will need to get setup for your barbecue. There is nothing worse than it being an hour before the event and realizing that you have forgotten something of major consequence.
Having a theme barbecue is a lot of fun. Summer is great time to go with a beach theme. It is easy to find decorations that go with this theme. Tiki torches are a nice touch for a tropical outdoor setting. There are many other themes that can be used at a barbecue.
