Virginia Tech Copycats
Teens Threaten to "Do a Va. Tech"
A 16 year old boy was arrested at my son's school in Merced California on April 19th, only three days after the Virginia Tech massacre. The teenager was angry with his girlfriend and another boy. He didn't want his ex-girlfriend talking to this guy and so he sent him a Myspace message threatening to "Do a Virginia Tech at Merced High school." His email also stated that the young man would be on the top of the list. When police officers questioned the minor about sending that email, his answer confirmed that he did have plans to commit some act of violence. Police officials are saying that the boy was only intending to hurt his ex-girlfriend and some former friends as if planning to harm and kill a select few from a specified group is not that bad. They are saying though, that in light of recent events at Virginia Tech, they take all threats seriously and could result in expulsion. Ahem. Yes they did say expulsion. It's absurd.
Thursday evening Merced High School principle called via automated message and alerted us to an event happening at school. He warned us that a student had been arrested for making threats against another student and left it that. We really didn't know the full extent of what had happened.
Tuesday, the 24th the principle calls again and gives us the full details; at least the full amount that he could give us while still observing confidentiality laws and minor protection and all that. He waits 5 days to make the call; meanwhile we've seen it on the news and read it in the papers.
This was a really shocking experience to go through. My son is a freshman at Merced High School and I worry about him every day. Now I have to send him out the door each day wondering if someone else is going to try to copycat the Virginia Tech massacre. While other cities and schools are tightening security Merced is apparently considering expulsion as a deterrent. What kind of nonsense is that?

- Police have threatened expulsion
