Spinal Tap, the band immortalized in the mockumentary This is Spinal Tap, will reunite on July 7, 2007 as part of a worldwide series of rock concerts aimed at promoting awareness of global warming. (Though, to be quite honest, the only person left in the world who isn't aware of global warming is the man who sits in that chair in that funny-shaped office in that big white mansion.) Spinal Tap will be playing live at Wembley Stadium in London. As part of the Spinal Tap-mania that is expected to sweep around the globe just like rising sea levels if the policies of George W. Bush aren't radically changed, there will also be a new 15 minute film that covers Spinal Tap's reunion. Why would a band most famous for songs lyrics like "Big bottom/big bottom/talk about bum cakes/my girl's got 'em" be invited to perform at a concert intended to raise awareness of such a pressing and serious political hot potato as global warming? After all, according to This is Spinal Tap director Marty DeBergi, guitarist Nigel Tufnel proved to only slightly more aware of the issue than Pres. Bush. According to DeBergi: Nigel thought that global warming could be halted merely shedding his jacket. Still, all things considered, that should be more than enough to warrant Tufnel's selection by Pres. Bush to head up his global warming policy. Makes more sense than hiring literary hack Michael Crichton.
This will not be the first time that the Spinal Tap has reunited. Following the massive success of the documentary on the band they seemed to just disappear off the face of the earth. Rumors abounded and there were more unsubstantiated sightings of the trio than sightings of Elvis at McDonald's. For instance, there was the rumor that Nigel Tufnel had turned to directing community theater. Singer David St. Hubbins was reported to be working at Area 51. Of course, the strangest rumor of all had bassist Derek Smalls actually being turned into an animated character! Fortunately, all these wild speculations were put to rest in the early 90s when Spinal Tap reunited to record the multi-silica selling album Break Like the Wind.
And then nothing.
