Joing the already acknowledged religions( and their 38 various symbols) Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, and Islam, will be the Wiccan pentacle. The United States Department of Vetran Affairs; after having been in litigations with the families of Wiccan fallen soldiers have come to a settlement. The settlement which entitles the families to adorn the graves of lost loved ones with their most sacred religious symbol, ( in both national cemetaries as well as on government issued stones) also includes the U.S. DVA to pay out $225,000 in attorney fees and court costs. This also means that Wiccans can have the pentcale placed on grave markers in any cemetary- public or private, and most importantly will be given the respect given to all other religons.

Sources have stated that the original desicion(s) which did not allow the Wiccan pentacles to be placed on grave stones were influenced in part by political considerations. President Bush, while still govenor of Texas made a statement claiming he did not believe that "witchcraft is a religon". Various documents that supported the fact the VA was influenced by such became known during litigations. Wiccans were not entitled to the same rights as other religious groups and continuosly face stigmas due to misinformation and dogma.

The media has frequently tainted the idealology of Wicca; often refer to it in the same regard as Satanism, inverting the pentacle which is mean to serve as a reminder of the five elements not devil worship. Air, water, earth, fire, and spirit are alot different than hatred and defiance upon last check. Despite the beliefs of the majority, in the Constitution we are entitled to the freedom of religon- regardless of whether the majority practices or agrees with the religon at hand.

The lwsuit was brought forth by the Americans United for Seperation Between Church and State on behalf of the Wiccans, who were until now forced to bury their loved ones without religous acknowledment.

The 11 soldiers whose families had filed requests for markers with a pentacle on them will be recieving them within 14 days- just in time for the Memroial Day holiday.

In a society where we are all supposed to be free to express ourselves, it's a shame that it took until now to allow this. Thanks for the heads up.

Interesting information. The subject is good, but just a friendly bit of constructive criticism? For those of us who have a hard time staying focused on an article with lots of spelling errors, maybe you could consider using spell check. That is totally meant in friendly way, lol!

great article. I read about this awhile ago and couldn't believe that wiccans weren't afforded the same respect as everyone else....I'm glad that justice finally prevailed.

Great article. I know a lot of people that are wiccan and are hapy about the decision.

Great article. People should be free to practice any religion, or no religion at all for that matter.

I heard about this in the news, and had no idea that it hadn't been allowed before. I don't understand why the government wouldn't allow it to begin with. People really need to get up to date with things.

I didn't even know the pentacle wasn't allowed on graves, although thinking about it I realize now that I've never seen one before, and now I know the reason. Great article about something I wasn't aware of. Witchcraft and paganism have been around since the dawn of time and it's nice to see that they're finally being acknowledged and that families are able to decide for themselves what symbols they choose to put on their loved one's tombs.

All I have to say is it's about time. Great article on an important topic.

How odd that the government felt the need to intervene in how the families choose to mourn. :(

Woo hoo! About damn time. It's bad enough to face the ridiculous prejudices that exist out there, but to have them sanctioned by the government? This never, ever should have become an issue in the first place.

Awesome. I never could figure out why one person's grave might offend another person's grave.

Miss Faith -- it wasn't timely. This has been an issue of contention for at least a quarter century.
