I've been an Associated Content writer since April 2006. At last count, I had published 317 articles, with about 20 more sitting in the queue. With this experience under my belt, following are five ways I think AC could be improved to make CPs - and AC itself - more money.

1. Create an Article Management System: What do I mean?

Many freelance writers use AC as their online portfolio. Some writers specialize, while others are generalists. To make the site more effective for those of us who use it this way, I wish there was a way that we could organize our content by subject matter.

For example, I contribute a lot of articles on the business of freelance writing. I also write real estate articles, entertainment articles, reviews (movies, books), career articles, etc.

My online portfolio at AC would be much more effective if I was able to organize the content by subject matter. That way, when I direct clients there, they could immediately access the style of writing they're considering hiring me for.

Timothy Sexton, AC's first Content Producer of the Year, has done a wonderful job of organizing his content like this. I'm going to follow suit. Check out Mr. Sexton's site here.

Suggestion: After an article is published, AC can allow the Content Producers (CPs) themselves to categorize the content. This way, CPs can set up their portfolio by content just the way the want.

2. Article Series: I write a lot of article series, eg, Part I, Part II, etc. Recently, AC has not allowed you to title the article the same way and simply add Part I, Part II, etc.

For example, my four-part article series on Why Real Estate Agents Make Less Than Minimum Wage (Part I of IV). I had to retitle parts II thru IV. This makes it confusing if readers are trying to follow a series.

FYI, the remainder of the series is as follows: More on Why Realtors Make Less than Minimum Wage (Part II of IV); How Much Do Real Estate Agents Really Make? (Part III of IV); and How NOT to Be a Minimum Wage Realtor (Part IV of IV).

It would be so much easier to follow if I could have just left the title the same and added Part ? to each submission.

Takeaways
  • Create an Article Management System
  • Add a Freelance Writer's Job Site
  • Reject Poorly Written Articles
Did You Know?
While niche sites like MediaBistro.com and JournalismJobs.com feature these opportunities, AC already has half the formula in place to capitalize on a job site - job seekers.

I like your article, some very interesting points in it. We are all guilty of bad writing sometimes, mine come from rushing, meaning that when something is hot to get out of my head I make the odd typo, lol. I am passionate about most of the things I write about, and can get carried away for this reason when I am writing, editing isn't my strong point. There are some things I haven't worked out such as getting sub titles to display in bold, underlined or in different colours, now this is an idea for an article for you. Good work, have fun! Oh and I subscribed to you because you write interesting articles.

So true. You are so right. I have also been guilty of articles being rejected for poor writing. It sucks so hard and it is the best thing that can happen b/c it just makes me want to improve. Great advice. I'm going to try them. Great article.
