In the internet age of advertising, there are several different search engines online that offer businesses the chance to advertise on their website homepage. They also offer businesses the chance to place advertisements on their search results pages. The three leading search engines that offer onli
ne advertising are Google, Yahoo and MSN. Google calls its advertising search engine "Google Adsense" and Yahoo calls its advertising department "Yahoo Search marketing." There has recently been a big debate on the internet over which search engines give you the most bang for your buck.

Out of the three search engine advertisers, Google advertising has been around the longest while MSN has been around the shortest duration of time. Each of the three online search engine advertisers use the same method of pricing and payment: pay-per click. This means that when a person on the internet clicks on the company's ad, that company has to pay the search engine a certain amount of money each time. The amount of money that a company pays for each click on their ad is determined by an auction type of setting. Companies bid against each other for the keywords that they desire. For example, suppose two different sports companies wanted to obtain use of the keyword "Sports" when someone searched it on Google so that their ad would appear first. The company that offered Google that most amount of money per click would win the auction. At any time, a company can be outbid for a keyword and lose use of that keyword. They would then be notified by Google that someone has outbid them for that keyword. Then that company would either have to outbid the other sports company or buy a different keyword.

Yahoo search marketing works in similar fashion. The main difference is that the first ad that appears on the left-hand side of the page isn't always the most expensive ad or keyword. The first ad that is shown on the page when someone searches for results on the Yahoo search engine is determined by a certain formula devised by Yahoo. This formula takes into account keyword price, how often someone clicks on a company's ad, and the relevance of the search.
