There are at least five things women should know about their cars, before there is a problem.

If you're like me, the last place you can be found is poking around under the hood of your car. "Car stuff" makes me uneasy mainly because I am uncomfortable with it, and my lack of knowledge about car maintenance.

At least, I used to be that way.

A wonderful man decided one day that the two of us should spend some time under the hood of my car together. No, that's not a metaphor. I popped the hood, he opened it and the lesson began.

1. How to Pump Gas

This one is a no-brainer, even for an un-car minded person like me. However, I have known plenty of women who have never pumped their own gas, and wouldn't know how to if they needed to pump their own gas. Even if you "always" have your gas pumped, and have a decent number of full-serve gas stations in your area, it is still important to know how to to undo the gas cap and pump your own gas.

2. Check the Oil

The first thing he showed me was where to find the oil. The cap on the oil tank was a little tricky, it was more pull than twist, but we did get it off. He also showed me how to check the oil. It is also important to know which type of oil your car takes, and how to add some oil if you needed to do that on your own.

Also find out where the air filter is, if it is accessible. It is cheaper to cahnge your own air filter before a serviced oil change thann it is to purchase an air filter from a place like JiffyLube.

3. Check the Transmission Fluid

One important car maintenance task that women should definitely know how to do is to check their transmission fluid. Unless there is a problem, or your car is old like mine, you may not actually have to ever add your own transmission fluid. It is still important to know where it is under the hood, and how to add transmission fluid. Also know which type of transmission fluid to use.

4. Brake Fluid

Brake fluid is another one of those things we never think about. Have someone show you where it is and how to check it.

5. Change a Tire

Great tips, I can do all of these and even change the brakes if needed.

I know how to change a tire but unfortunately it is too taxing to get the &$%@$# lug nuts loosened.
