Many deer hunters take to the woods without much thought, if any, as to where the deer actually are. Sure, some get lucky and have other hunters push deer past their poorly chosen location. Deer hunters who are successful year after year hunt where the deer are. These hunters thoroughly understand the area they hunt. By logical conclusion, they place their tree stands in a spot that has a high probability of success.

First, the basics...

The first thing to consider when locating deer is to determine where their food source and bedding areas are located. Typically, deer will bed in either a very dense thicket area that offers a safe seclusion or an open area that gives the deer good visibility. Food sources are normally mature woods offering a variety of nut trees or crop planted farm land.

Now that you've determined the food and bedding areas on the land you hunt, look for the deer highways to these areas. Deer are creatures of habit, and being so, will travel the same routes in their area. Look for ridges or river bottoms that connect the food and bedding areas. Search out the bottlenecks. These are areas along the travel routes where the thicket or wooded areas narrow because of the terrain or intrusion of open land.

Narrowing your choices...

After you know where the food, bedding area and travel routes are located, it's time to eliminate some spots. You want to hunt the best area and not waste time with others. To do this you need to think about the approach to your tree stand. Sometimes you will be heading to your tree stand in the very early morning hours under the cover of darkness. Other times you will going to your tree stand in the early afternoon hours for an evening hunt.
