Many people loosely monitor their nutrition and make sure not to gorge on bad foods: Not eating ice cream by the tube, stopping at 1 candy bar, ordering a chicken sandwich instead of a cheese burger.

One day you can't fit in your pants. "I watch what I eat these pants must have shrunk." So you grab another pair and they don't fit either. "Hummm" you look in the mirror and you seen the problem. Overnight Flab! "How did this happen I didn't eat anything outrageous last night. It must be in my genes. I can't help it. All my older relatives are fat. It was just a matter of time."

Now What Really Happened

There is a certain amount of calories you need to maintain your weight. Consume less and you lose weight. Consume more and you gain weight. It takes 3500 unused calories to lose or gain 1 pound of fat. Now if you are loosely watching what you eat and you do a pretty good job and only consume 100 calories (Less than a full can of soda) more then you should per day. Not too bad right?

Well on that pace you will gain 1 pound of pure fat every 35 days. Or 10.5 pounds of fat per year. Continue this for 5 years and that's 52.5 extra pounds of pure undesired body fat. This extra weight was built so gradually that you didn't notice gaining it. Make sure to really watch what you eat and how many calories you consume and you won't have to worry about waking up in an undesired body with nothing to wear.
