Undercover Investigation: The Newest Identity Theft Scam

Are you ready to be totally freaked out? Do the following:

Get a friend (husband, girlfriend, etc) who has a cell phone. Pick up your cellular phone and dial this number: 407-386-3966. You will hear a dial tone for about 5 - 10 seconds then it will ask you to enter the number you wish to call. Enter the persons phone number who is in the room with you. Wait a second then it will ask you to enter the number which you which to "mask". Pick anyone's number who you know your friend has logged in their cell phone. You will now be asked to confirm both numbers and press the pound key if correct. After you press the pound key you will be in for the shock of your life. Your friend's phone will ring and the number that appears will not be yours, even though you are the one calling them, but it will be the number that you chose to "mask". Your friends, suspecting nothing, will answer the phone thinking they are going to be greeted by the person who is showing up on their caller id, but they will be in for a huge surprise to discover that it is you!

Why am I telling you this? Well, imagine the possibilities...

Lets say your credit card company calls you and says they need to update their information and asks for your account number to verify that it is you before they can begin. You would give them this information, right? Or what if your bank contacts you and requests your social security number? Little do you know that the friendly voice you are speaking to on the other end of the line may not be your bank or your credit card company at all...it could be me, or your next door neighbor. It could be the woman who rings you up when you rent a movie from Blockbuster on a Friday night. It could even be a coworker. The possibilities are endless and incredibly dangerous. You never know who you are talking to, even if the phone number comes up as a familiar one.
