This faux paint technique will work best on painted kitchen cabinets. If you have wood kitchen cabinets and are not willing to paint them out first, then just do not try this!
So, you have a few options when you want to add some hand painted architectural detail to resurface the look of your kitchen cabinets.
Picture frame molding added to a plain flat cabinet is the easiest way to completely transform your kitchen cabinets in one day! You can paint the look of this as well.
The first step is to tape off your faux picture frame molding. You want to use your blue painter's tape to tape off a rectangle on your kitchen cabinet that mirror the line of the edge of the cabinet itself. Tape this first line off about three inches in on the cabinet.
Now, inside of the first rectangle, tape off a slightly small one about one inch in.
Now, on the top left and bottom right corner tape off a 90 degree angle on the inside of the two rectangles. Now, you are ready to paint.
Paint colors should be one shade lighter than you kitchen cabinets and one color that is a shade darker then your painted kitchen cabinets.
Now, paint in the left and bottom lines of the rectangle with the darker shade.
Let this dry and remove the corner tape. Retape the 90 degree angles so you can paint the remainder of the rectangle faux picture frame molding.
This should be the top right and side the side right of the taped off picture molding. Paint with the lighter shade of paint.
Let this dry and remove the painter's tape.
