Holistic Moms Network a Blessing and Cure for Eco-Friendly Moms
The Holistic Moms Network is getting a lot of publicity today because a CareerBuilder.com article highlights that former child actress Mayim Bialik has went on to take a role as spokeswoman for the Holistic Moms Network.
Mayim Bialik is best known for her role as Blossom Russo in the 90's sitcom Blossom. The Holistic Moms Network spokeswoman played a happy-go-lucky fashionably challenged teenager in her role.
What exactly is the Holistic Moms Network? It sounds like something that many moms would want to take part in. The Holistic Moms Network sounds like something wholesome and pure.
The Holistic Moms network is a non-profit group for parents interested in holistic health and green living.
According to the Holistic Moms Network Web site, their mission is to "generate national awareness, education, and support for holistic parenting and green living by providing nurturing, open-minded, and respectful local community networks that encourage families to share these ideals and learn from each other."
While I am all for green living and living a sustainable lifestyle, the holistic health portion of the Holistic Moms Network isn't exactly something I personally support in every way it functions.
According to Wikipedia, holistic health is "a philosophy of medical care that views physical and mental and spiritual aspects of life as closely interconnected and equally important approaches to treatment."
When used in combination with a treatment regimen monitored by a medical doctor, I support holistic healthcare. What I do not support is the alternative medicine that ignores medical practice in favor of "natural" alternatives.
I really don't support those who choose not to vaccinate their children - that's just too scary to me.

I agree with those who have already commented. I would like to see a more accurate picture of HMN depicted in the media. Holistic living means different things to different people and the members of HMN are there to support all parents on any part of that journey!

I have been a member of the HMN for 3 years and it has been an amazing organization for me. Not only is it full of smart, educated, thoughtful women, it is a resource for the community. I do not agree with many of the author's statements, particularly the one about vaccines and only joining this group if you want to be attached to your child 24/7 and not have anyone else watch them. In fact, within this community, many moms will do babysitting exchanges with each other. The author had some good points but is off the mark with her overall assessment of what this group stands for.

y we need generous, respectful dialogue about the subject. In HMN the author would find parents who vaccinate and those who don't Every decision is respected.
Finally, I found it quite humorous that Holistic moms are characterized as co-dependent parents who want to be with their kids 24/7. It is impossible to label a holistic mom as an attachment parent, a public school parent, a Ferber parent, a Waldorf parent, or any other kids of parent. There are eight thousand of us, after all, which means there are eight thousand different perspectives on motherhood.

I am quite surprised at this post...and at the same time, I am not surprised.
I do appreciate the one or two weak thumbs up given to HMN by the author.
However, I found the majority of content to be presumptous and rather ignorant.
I think it is unfair in principle to critique a group of 8,000+ diverse families based on a website and a reference from Wikipedia. (Even in community college, Wikipedia wasn't accepted as a credible form of reference.)
I think it would be wonderful for the author to visit a Holistic Moms group and get personally involved with the mothers and fathers who choose to make educated, informed decisions about what they feel are the best choices for their children.
As for the vaccination comment, I would ask respectfully that the other side of the coin be considered-- that some parents feel just as afraid about vaccinating their children as NOT vaccinating them. Obviously, vaccinations are a complicated and controversial subject-- which is exactly wh

The HMN is not about ignoring medical advise in favor of alternatives. It is about educating mothers to make informed decisions for their families. Too many parents follow 'medical' experts and get terrible advise, but don't bother to research it on their own. Some parents may choose not to vaccinate, some made do an alternative schedule and some may follow the recommendations, but the HMN advocates parents making informed decisions.
