Couples Retreat Reviews Warn of Bad Comedic Therapy

Couples Retreat reviews should have at least been mixed, as each Couples Retreat review noted the funny people in the cast. But Couples Retreat reviews are not kind to how that cast is used, and are especially hard on Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau. Couples Retreat was co-written by the two recurring collaborators, and directed by a close friend of theirs. So the lousy Couples Retreat reviews are mainly falling on Vaughn, Favreau and director Peter Billingsley's heads.

Couples Retreat is exactly what it sounds like, as four couples go to a tropical paradise that is supposed to save their marriages. Most of the couples just want to party, but of course, learn something about themselves and their marriage by accident.

The Couples Retreat reviews should have been higher, considering who the couples are. Vaughn is paired with Watchman's Malin Akerman, while Favreau is with Kristin Davis, Jason Bateman is with Kristen Bell, and Faizon Love and Kali Hawk round it out. With Jean Reno and John Michael Higgins also on board, Couples Retreat looked to be at least respectable.

Instead, the Couples Retreat reviews are almost unanimously savage. Rotten Tomatoes has Couples Retreat with only 10% positive reviews, a new low for Vaughn and Favreay. The review consensus states that "Despite a talented cast and some reliably pleasant interplay between Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn, Couples Retreat leaves viewers stranded in an arid, mirthless comedy."

The swarm of negative Couples Retreat reviews is the latest blow to Vince Vaughn, who has been panned by critics in his last several films. Vaughn's motor-mouth style is already getting old to many, but co-writing the script with Favreau opens him up to new levels of backlash.

Now, pretty much every Couples Retreat review will state how Vaughn and Favreau are a long way away from their Swingers days, as that cult classic film nears its 13'th anniversary. But at the least, Favreau can fall back on directing the Iron Man franchise to balance things out. Vaughn doesn't have superheroes and Robert Downey Jr at his disposal.
