Top 10 Classic Christmas Songs (plus 16)
I have a confession to make. I am completely and hopelessly addicted to Christmas music. I love all kinds of Christmas music. You name it - traditional, pop and rock, classical, children's music and the classics. When I started thinking about compiling a list of the top ten classic Christmas songs, I thought, "This will be easy". Boy was I wrong!
What you find when you start looking at the classics is that there are many core Christmas songs that have been done over and over, by many, many artists. Now the reason these songs have been done so many times is that these are the songs we all know and love. These are the songs that we've all been singing since we were small. So, now the question is... Whose version is better?
Rather than leave you with my top ten, I have decided to give you my top twenty-five, which no matter what order you put them in, would make a great CD mix for a dinner party.
"Old Lang Syne" by Guy Lombardo
At twenty-six, we have "Old Lang Syne" by Guy Lombardo. Ok, I know I said twenty-five, but this song needed to be represented, and really isn't a Christmas Song any way.
"Christmas Is just Around The Corner" by Barry Manilow
At twenty-five, I'm going to put a song that was actually just released last year. This song has "instant classic" written all over it. It's like taking a step back in time.
"God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" by Bing Crosby
Bing Crosby will make several appearances on this list, and starts off here with this traditional classic.
"It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas" by Johnny Mathis
Something about this song just gets you in the mood for the holidays.
"Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" by Frank Sinatra
This song brings you down from the hustle and bustle of the season.
"The Most Wonderful Time of the Year" by Johnny Mathis
It is the happiest season of all, isn't it?
"Winter Wonderland" by Tony Bennett
Tony reminds us how magical a snowfall can really be in song number twenty on my list.
"Sleigh Ride" by Johnny Mathis
Can't you just picture it?
"Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer" by Gene Autry
A great reminder that there is hope for all of us misfits!
