Movie Review: The Craft (1996)

Director: Andrew Fleming
Writers: Peter Filardi, Peter Filardi
Release Date: 3 May 1996 (USA)

This is the story of Sarah Bailey, a new girl that begins at a Catholic school, and her tribulations through high school and the occult. She meets Nancy, Bonnie, and Rochelle, three girls that are teenagers interested in the occult and practice Wicca. Bonnie realizes that Sarah is a natural witch and after short protest from Nancy become their 'fourth'. With a fourth girl in their coven they can tap into a power that many people never see. Sarah is a suicidal teenager with a painful past as well.

This is a very good movie, one of the most interesting takes of witchcraft. I loved that Fairuza Balk, who plays Nancy, is an actual witch and was able to make this movie more authentic with little touches of the way she practices, like her chanting in a whisper in one scene. I've read that after this movie was released that Rachel True, the girl that plays Rochelle became a Wiccan. I'm not sure if it's a fact or not so don't quote me.

It depicts high school to a T, with being an outcast, how gossip is started, and how for no reason at all you can simply just not be liked. I love how each girl's story is told throughout the movie, it gives you a better understanding of how each girl is where they are and why they're interested in something 'more powerful than themselves'. This movie gives these teen girls what most girls wish, a way to make their lives better.

When the girl's begin to realize they're actually making things happen their lives begin to change for the better, Bonnie's scars go away, Rochelle's revenge on a girl that hates her is inflicted, Sarah is given revenge in the form of a boy that spread lies about her becoming completely in love with her, and Nancy gains power over her situation with a blessing of the god they pray to.

It also has a good lesson, one practiced in modern witchcraft; don't put out anything without expecting a backlash. Nancy ends up in a mental asylum; Rochelle and Bonnie lose their powers because they misuse them, and Sarah almost gets raped by the boy she tries to control out of spite.

It's believed that the character Nancy is a devil worshipper and it's hinted even in the special features. You can pick up details that she's a possible Satanist, she's using the other's power to gain what she wants. Selfishness is a Satanic trait.
