What can we do to help the unwanted animals of the world?

I would like to challenge you as an animal lover to visit your local pound and spend a good portion of your day there . As you visit with the animals it will dawn on you that many of societies cast offs will not see another tomorrow. They will not feel the touch of their special owner when they need comfort. They will not be able to chase their favorite tennis ball in the big front yard or wait anxiously for their master to toss it for them. They will not be able to greet their favorite loved one at the door after a long day at work. They will not live to see another day... that is the plain hard truth that many of us choose to ignore.

At some point during your visit you will be overwhelmed as you look into the pleading eyes of the doomed animals. You will feel helpless as yearning hearts look at you begging to be your new best friend. You will be filled with sorrow for all the neglected unwanted animals that I promise you. Your heart will break for the litter of puppies barely old enough to eat , their only crime was being born. Your soul will ache for the little kitten who was thrown out by the curb because her owner could not give her away. Your soul will scream out for the old crippled dog who's only infraction was that he was just getting too old. The endless reasons an animal ends up at the shelter goes on and on. The reasons to me are not justified . The responsibility lies totally with the people.

We as caring people need to adopt animals from the shelters instead of buying from breeders. When we buy from irresponsible breeders who are in it just for the money then we are adding to the problem. A person should really think about the many animals on death row who await execution before they go and buy from a breeder or puppy mill. The doomed animals deserve a fair chance to. Why not give one of them a get out of jail free card? You can adopt from a shelter or a rescue for a fraction of what an animal from a breeder would cost. Also people should be aware that many purebred animals end up in shelters and that neglect and disregard turns a blind eye to pure blood and pedigree papers.

This is Buddy. He was rescued from a shelter in TN when he was found left tied at an abandoned house to fend for himself. He is now living at our private rescue at http://www.4-the-luv-of-a-critter.com .

randomread...I don't know what planet you live on but dog/cat over population is a huge problem. If it was not such a problem there would not be so many lives lost every day at the animal shelters. This will continue to be a problem until people learn that breeding their backyard pet "fluffy" just because they want a cute little puppy or kitten is WRONG. They just do not see the big picture. The big picture is that the one litter of puppies or kittens can result into 1000's of off spring on down the line that will die in the shelters because they are not wanted. That is the big picture. Your way of thinking is why nothing is being done about the problem. It is selfish of us humans to turn a blind eye to the problem.

First I would like to state that randomread 06-15-2007 knowledge is very limited and very anger-filled, and full of overflowing hatred and selfishness. Most apparent is that this person also did not receive enough hugs and especially love and support as a child and this is not manifesting itself as they age. This most likely is hereditary and is their history and their and their reproductive future. A total shame and unfortunately all the hugs and love in the world to drowned people like this will not help these people as their hearts are already hardened by parents with the same hardened hearts and lack of love and attention from their parents and their parents. If miracles do happen----NOW WOULD BE THAT TIME----AND LONG AWAITED FOR!!!!!!! If you can't look into the eyes and it doesn't touch to the heart, your just death walking---how unfortunate------and you belong 6ft under---go now please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! stop hurting the living with your waste!

I don't see a dog/cat overpopulation problem. I see a problem with overzealous humans crowding shelters with animals who, left to themselves, could probably find their way back home. I also see an overpopulation problem for mice, squirrels, and similar pests that nature intended dogs and cats to eat. If we're going to be phobic about "alley cats," we'd better start paying animal wardens to come out and pick up all the alley RATS!
