2009 McDonald's Monopoly Underway
McDonald's fast food chain kicked off their annual Monopoly promotion October 6, 2009, lasting slightly less than a month ending November 2nd 2009. McDonald's fans and Monopoly fans alike flock to the restaurant for a chance at the one million dollar prize awarded yearly; with many winning some of the smaller prizes—but with all patrons getting a meal out of the deal.
History / Interesting Prizes
McDonald's monopoly sweepstakes is open to residents of the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Australia and Portugal. McDonald's has been running this wildly-popular advertising promotion for years (at least 2001) and it has been an annual staple to fast-food culture ever since. The earlier beginnings in 2003-2004 had upper-prizes of a digital plasma TV and a Toshiba HD LCD TV & Home Theater System. In more recent years (2006-on), the prizes have all been restructured with large sums of cold, hard, cash. How American, thanks McDonald's.
In 2005, if you collected the entire railroad station property set, you won a Dodge Viper. Sounds good, better than your Honda Civic in the driveway, huh? (No, really—I love the Honda Civic, read my other article 'JDM Dis!' about my love for these little machines). Also in years past, the Ventnor Avenue winning piece for the yellow property set used to have a grand prize of $10,000—which, since 2007, has been upped to $25,000. This was a result of an increase of the orange and red property sets reflecting a change from $1,500 prize to $5,000 and $5,000 to $10,000 since 2006-2007 transitional years. Ah, McDonald's—you know your consumers well.
In 2008 McDonald's also tried out the Golden Ave. and Arches Ave. property set—with a $100,000 payment if you can get the rare Golden Ave. piece. It did not return in 2009, but it's all good. Given the current economy, we're happy just to see McDonald's Monopoly on the agenda this year.
