Some Women Turning to Cytotec as an Abortion Alternative

Women and Doctors Alike Use Cytotec for Uses Other Than Its Intentions

Have you heard of Cytotec or its generic form Misoprostol? This drug is intended to treat stomach ulcers and protect the stomach lining by decreasing acid secretion. Another controversial use deals with abortion. Some women are turning to Cytotec as a cost effective alternative to end an

unwanted pregnancy as they cannot afford the more expensive traditional methods.

The practice of using Cytotec or Misoprostol privately by women to end pregnancy has been prevalent in Latin America countries for a number of years. Its popularity there is well known, as abortion in these countries is often illegal. In the United States, this is a growing problem as well. Many immigrant and low-income women have limited means and lack or do not have healthcare available to them. This drug is easily obtained thru underground sources and is very inexpensive to purchase.

As with any abortion there are risks involved. These are compounded by the fact that women are treating themselves and do not seek appropriate medical attention when complications occur. Heavy bleeding is often a complication and for many women a complete abortion does not always happen. Chances for complications greatly increase when this drug is taken beyond the first trimester. By the time many become fearful and seek help at their local Emergency Room, it is often too late.

Doctors are using this drug "off label" as well. Once the Food and Drug Administration approves a medication, a doctor is not restricted on how he chooses to prescribe that drug via a loophole in the system. Many doctors are using Cytotec or its generic form Misoprostol to induce labor or to soften the cervix for other medical procedures in the gynecological field.

just wanted to share an experience. I had a blighted ovum (no fetus), discovered at 8.5 weeks pregnant, but, my body wouldnt miscarry naturally. Dr. prescribed 4 (200mg) pills of misoprostol (cytotec generic) to be inserted vaginally. supposed to work in 6 hours - nothing happened. the next day, she prescribed 2 pills vaginally, and 2 orally...nothing happened for another day and a half. Then I started bleeding and passing clots. so, it worked, and it was not that painful. I've had worse periods.....

i took cytotec but the bleeding was not that profuse. it was like it was my last day of menstruation. i didnt even had to change my napkin since it was like nothing. it was least expected because all i knew is i will bleed profusely. what should i do?

i've used it before..and it works for me.. it scared the hell of me when i saw too much blood.. i regret it now because i'm having irregular period..i dont really know the effect. but please note that it's not always the answer of abortion.. if you're not ready to have a baby yet then just use some protection or just dont have sex at all.

How do you know exactly what drug you actually took, as it was evidently obtained on the "backstreet"? Its very shocking what you have to put up with.

I used it 1 month ago and i havent stopped bleeding since, i think i have ruptured my falopian tubes which means i may need surgery to remove them, if i dont have the surgery i could die from the blood loss. Where i live in Qatar its impossible to see a doctor as i dont have a marriage certificate and the authorites will be contacted if i try to. I dont know what to dom it has ruined my life. Please if anyone is thinking of taking these stupid pills, think twice, the risks could be fatel.
