Colarusso's Restaurant in Avoca, Pennsylvania Review

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Colarusso's on 725 Main St., in Avoca Pa. When we got there it was standing room only (on a Saturday night) with at least a half hour wait. I went to the bar and ordered a round of drinks, which we had to stand and sip. Let me tell you, it was worth the wait!

We ordered two trays. One of the original square red (they only have square pizza) and as a tray of fresh tomatoes and garlic went to another table, well how could you pass that up?

The shells, I found out are homemade in their own bakery! This explains the "fresh dough" taste. Also, all the sauces are homemade, nothing from a can here.

Now, that was just for our appetizer. We also ordered two antipastas. The waitress said they served 2, but there were six of us and there was more than plenty to go around with some left over.

For the main course, we all ordered something different. It was a small but appetizing menu with all of you typical Italian favorites.

Even though we ordered from the menu, we all had special requests that were honored without any slack from the waitress of kitchen staff!

I had a stuffed eggplant that was a combination (my own request) of ricotta and spinach. Other guests order Fettuccini Alfredo with fresh tomatoes (the tomatoes were a special request), homemade crab cakes with a side salad (came with coleslaw), homemade gnocchi with vodka sauce (came with tomato sauce), meatball sandwich on Italian bread (was suppose to be a sub), and hot wings, extra crispy with sauce and blue cheese mixed on the side.

The wait was a little long due to the special requests, but the food was GREAT.

Even though there is a bar, Colarusso's has a great family atmosphere. The bar is only for waiting for a table and to service the wait staff. The staff is friendly, bathrooms are clean and there is even a large room for parties. Parking however is a nightmare. We had to literally park one block away, thankfully it was nice weather. But for the experience we had, I would walk several blocks. There are several other pizza shops in a 3 block radius that had parking available. I didn't understand the Colarusso attraction, until now.
