Getting a tattoo is for most, a very serious and major decision. It is important that you know what to do to prepare for receiving your first tattoo.

First, before you even step into the parlor, make sure this is what you really want! I spent 2 years sitting on the idea of my first tattoo (some musical notes) before I actually went ahead with having the process done. This isn't something to take lightly; it is something you will have for the rest of your life, or spend hundreds trying to remove. Save yourself the money and the regret and give yourself time before rushing out and getting one.

Do your research on tattoo parlors in your area. One dead give away that the parlor might not be that reputable is a very low price. Unless you know the owner personally and he's giving you a discount, usually places that offer a tattoo for $20 are ones to steer clear of. You get what you pay for and this is something permanent, so paying a decent amount for something you'll have for a lifetime is worth it.

When you have found the right place, make sure you go in and check it out first hand. Speak with whoever is there, get an idea of the people who work at the establishment. You want to be comfortable and feel you are under the best possible care.

Many places will ask for a deposit if you have to make an appointment, though sometimes if they are having a slow day you can usually walk in that day. So make sure you have the cash on you if you are given the opportunity immediately.

Make sure you are on time for your appointment. This is a business like any other and if you are not there they certainly can give their time to another client.

Eat before you go. This is crucial. You need something in your stomach and some sort of energy otherwise there is a possibility of passing out. So make time to have a good meal before hand.

If you are nervous it's perfectly normal! Bring a friend (many places will allow one person to come with you) if you need the support. Let your artist know your nervous. You are not the first and won't be the last to come in and have a little bit of fear. Having them reassure you and explain the process makes it all a bit easier.

I have not yet had a tattoo, however i am intending to get one in the next month or so. I have spent the last year deciding the design i want and will take a mate with me, I am unsure what to expect in terms of pain as i have ahd many varied responses, many saying yeah it did hurt, others saying its not that bad. I want 3 chinese symbols vertically down my outer calf yet i don't know any one that has had one here before, what pain should i expect here? your responses are appriciated thanks

ALL YOU PEOPLE IS JUST DUMB. IF YOU CANT DEAL WITH THE PAIN DONT GET A DAMN TATT. I GOT 10 OF THEM MYSELF AND I DIDNT NEED CREAM A BOOK OR TO COUNT FUCKEN SHEEPS. I JUST LAYED THERE AND TOOK THE PAIN AND IF YOU TAKE A BREAK YOU MIGHT NOT WANT TO GO BACK SO TO ME IT'S BEST TO JUST LET THEM DO WHAT THEY HAVE TO DO AND GET IT OVER WITH.

Well if u feel tat it may hurt u could check 2 see if tha tattoo parlor has this numbing ointment tat they rub on your arm, so tat u cant feeling anythang at all. But tha only thang wit the cream is tat it cost like an xtra $5 or $10 fo them to use it on you, & also not all places have this cream, cuz they may not feel like buyin it.

Hey, i'm turning 21 in a week, and getting my second tattoo done. Getting a tattoo is a really big deal, and yes i won't lie, it does hurt. My artist was great, when the pain became too much, he allowed me to stop and go for a brief walk. It really helps to have a decent artist. The more u think about the pain, the more it will hurt. Relax, after the first 15 minutes of so, it becomes numb and only starts to be uncomfortable. Focus on something else, if it's a few hours work like mine, take a book u can't put down, or close ur eyes and count sheep, (it actually works)!!
