Feel Bad Film of the Decade
In the world of book-to-film adaptations there are few writers more prolific than Stephen King. The rate at which films based on his works are cranked out it seems inevitable that nearly everything the man has ever put
to paper will wind up on the big screen sooner or later. Despite how many times King's work have graced the cinema,
The Mist brings in an element of some of his darker works that hasn't really made it on the screen before: real and true viciousness. The quality of horror films based on King's writings may vary but none have ever been as brutal, as dark, or as hopeless as this. This film isn't so much an experience as it is an ordeal. However it is an extremely well crafted ordeal thanks to the experienced hand of Frank Darabont (writer/director of
The Shawshank Redemption and
The Green Mile). This film is harsh and never once pulls punches, but it's difficult to argue that the ordeal is actually enjoyable.
