Lipuma's Coney Island at 621 N Main St in downtown Rochester, Michigan is AWESOME! First of all, the location is fantastic. It is in walking distance from downtown, the library, and Dairy Queen. It sits beside the Paint Creek and the trail. It is accessible by car, bike or feet. There is creek side outdoor, covered outdoor and indoor seating. The inside in very small but the covered outdoor seating is heated in the winter. However, it is still very cold even with the heaters in the dead of a Michigan winter. There are picnic tables beside the trail. Be prepared to share your meal with the ducks that are very well trained and have a taste for hotdog buns.
The last bits of advice are for families with kids. Bring a stroller for the little ones. They do not have boosters or highchairs and you will need to sit on the covered porch. The bathroom is for patrons only and is really an employees' bathroom. They let you use it if you ask. It does not have a changing table for babies.
They serve the best hot dogs in town! My husband loves the Chicago dog with all the pickles, chili, onions, mustard, relish, etc. It's served on the traditional poppy seed bun. I love the chili cheese dog myself. The cheese is shredded not soupy like some chains. Their fries are thin cut and can be covered in cheese, chili or both. We like ours smothered. We can eat there as a family of four for about twenty dollars. My husband gets two Chicago dogs. I get one chilidog. The kids each get a plain dog. We get an order of chili fries and 3 drinks. They serve Pepsi products, which includes our favorite soda, Vernors.
They have daily selections of homemade soups as well. The Italian wedding is the best. They also serve soft tacos made with the chili, which has the very fine ground beef in it.
They do tend to be very busy in the summer and the line can be seen going out the door. But don't let that stop you. It goes fast due to the comical guys behind the counter. They will give you a hard time in a good way. The catch is cash only so make sure you stop by the ATM before standing in line. Make sure you go to this Rochester institution. You won't be disappointed.
