Now, the first step is to lay out your plain paper. Lay it out on your dining room table. Now, have the kids take their silk tie and trace it onto the paper.
This will be their sounding board to draw out the designs or patterns they want to create on their hand painted father's day tie.
The designs can be anything the kids want! Simple stripes, polka dots, or more elaborate drawings.
Now, you need to transfer your designs onto the tie. You can either let the kids work freehand and keep their drawing nearby for inspiration or let them use a fabric pen to draw out the designs onto the tie. The fabric pen will disappear off the tie eventually, leaving only their painted designs. You can buy these at any fabric store!
Now, start tracing your pattern or design on with your gutta or water based resist. This can be bought at Dick Blick or Dharma Trading Co. as well. You can use black to make a more cartoon look or clear for older kids who may want to create more intricate designs.
Let this dry.
Now, start painting on your silk paints onto the Father's Day tie.
Let this dry when you have finished painting the silk tie.
Now, turn the Father's Day tie over and have the kids repeat this whole process on the back of the tie.
The Gutta should dry in about 30 minutes; the silk paints as well should dry very quickly. So, this easy Father's Day craft can be completed in one day or in two classes at school.
