London's Critics' Circle Honors the Best Contributions to the Arts Community
Each year, the Critics' Circle in London sits down to assess some of the best contributions to the arts community, and honor them through the London Critics Awards.
Their choices aren't just limited to film, either, which is the case for many such organizations. Instead, the Critics' Circle works to promote the arts throughout the United Kingdom and the world with a special focus on film, dance, drama, art, and music. Each specialty has a unique group of individuals who make decisions concerning awards, and together, these groups make up the Critics' Circle and the London Critics Awards.
The Critics' Circle
The Critics' Circle is a UK-based non-profit organization, committed to furthering and supporting the local, national, and international arts community. According to their history, they can date themselves back, in some shape or form, to the early 1900s. Since that time, they've worked collaboratively with other film festivals and arts organizations in order to support artists in various forms. Awards are one of the primary focuses of the Critics' Circle, which boasts some 300 plus members across the span of their five sections. Members are by invitation only, and awards are voted on by said members.
London Critics Awards
According to the Critics' Circle, they support five sections of the arts community: film, drama, music, art, and dance. Of those five sections, dance, drama, and film each have their own awards show annually. The London Film Critics Awards, perhaps the most well known of these three awards ceremonies, takes place each February in London. Recent winners have included international films such as "Unforgiven" and national films such as "Slumdog Millionaire."
