If you're a Nascar fan or watch any kind of recap show on the sports channels you probably are aware of the poor sportsmanship that's been going on. Angry fans have been throwing things onto the track at the race's winner every Sunday for the past few weeks. Granted, it's been seen a little over the past few years but it has rapidly grown out of proportion. This behavior not only makes the fans look bad but it reflects upon the entire sport. The recent Talladega race has been the worst by far. Jeff Gordon won his 77th race putting him one race ahead of the legendary Dale Earnhardt in the standings of all time wins. As he took his victory lap, bottles, cans, other trash and even toilet paper were thrown at him as he came by the grandstands. This event has sparked the debate about how this makes the sport look and how do we stop it.
If you watch any other sporting event, you rarely ever see anyone wailing any time of object at the athletes or in their direction. So with the outbreak of throwing things at the races puts a spot light on not only the fans but the entire Nascar organization. The fans have made themselves to look stupid and disrespectful. Not every fan throws things but it's that old saying of how it only takes one bad seed to ruin it for everyone else. There have been several comments made by numerous sources about how the Nascar fans look like rednecks or barbarians. It's understandable to be upset if the team or person you're rooting for does not win but that's no excuse to take it out on the team or person who did.
You also have to think a little bit outside of the box as to what could happen if something bad were to happen. At this point, all of the debris being thrown hasn't done anything but bounced off the cars and the track but what would happen if an airborne bottle were to hit an official? Or what if someone didn't throw it hard enough to make it over the fence and it hit another person in the grandstand? It's been said that's it's funny until someone gets hurt. Luckily no one has been injured yet but if it's not stopped, then what?
